What is Herpes?

Herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).  There are two strains to the virus,  HSV type 1 and HSV type 2.  HSV type I typically exists around the mouth area (commonly known as cold sores or oral herpes) while HSV type II typically exists in the genital area (commonly known as genital herpes).  However both HSV 1 and HSV 2 can be passed on and exist in either area.   It is estimated that around 80% of Australian adults have HSV type 1 and around 12% of Australian adults have HSV type 2.

How is herpes transmitted?

Herpes is transmitted via skin to skin contacted with the infected area (eg kissing, sexual intercourse etc).  Herpes can be transmitted even when symptoms are not present. It is estimated that only 20% of people that carry the herpes virus are actually aware that they have herpes, because they have little or no symptoms at all.

Oral herpes is often contracted as a child through kissing (parents kissing their children on the cheek etc). Oral herpes can also be the cause of genital herpes, ie, it can be transmitted to the genital area of another person via oral sex.

Genital herpes is generally contracted via sexual intercourse or oral sex.

Herpes Symptoms

Herpes symptoms may include flu like symptoms (particularly during your first outbreak), redness, blisters, itching or a rash-like appearance.  You may also notice a stinging sensation when you urinate.

Many people do not have any symptoms at all though, or have symptoms that are so minimal they they mistake it for something else and do not seek a medical diagnosis as a result.  It is advisable if you have any of the above symptoms to see a doctor, even if the symptoms seem small.

Herpes Support

Sometimes the hardest part about living with the virus is the range of emotions that you go through.  Remember though that you are not alone.  Around 1 in 8 Australian adults have genital herpes and there are dating sites available for you to meet others living with the virus.  Harmony Online Dating is Australia's largest herpes dating site and has over 1000 members.

If you are comfortable doing so, you may also like to consider talking to a friend or family member to help support you.  Alternatively, consider seeing a counsellor.  Your emotional wellbeing is half the battle to living with this virus, so don't be afraid to seek help if you feel you need it.

Herpes Treatment

There is no known cure for herpes, however there is medication available to help prevent and manage outbreaks.  There are essentially two types of treatment available to you:

Suppressive medication is taken daily with the aim of preventing outbreaks from occurring.  It is also known as preventative medication.

Episodic medication is taken at the time of an outbreak occurring with the aim of reducing the severity and length of symptoms.
